Experience

Michael specialises in commercial and taxation law, with a particular focus on complex tax disputes, including Part IVA and international tax matters.

He is regularly briefed as junior counsel to senior tax silks, and appears both led and unled before the Federal Court of Australia, the Supreme Courts of Victoria and New South Wales, and the County Court of Victoria.

Michael appears before the Administrative Review Tribunal and the Australian Taxation Office's General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR) Panel, acting for both taxpayers and the Commissioner of Taxation across a range of complex tax issues, including Part IVA, transfer pricing and international tax matters.

Michael's approach to a dispute is grounded as much in the evidence available to support a client's case as in the legal argument advanced on it — identifying, at an early stage, what facts and material a matter will turn on.

Before joining the Bar, Michael was a Manager in the Tax Controversy and Dispute Resolution team at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he worked on some of Australia's most complex tax disputes, engaging directly with the process by which a matter moves from audit and review, through objection, to litigation.

Michael has completed his Bachelor of Arts, Juris Doctor and Master of Laws at the University of Melbourne having studied specialist subjects in corporate and international tax.

Michael is mentored by Philip Solomon KC and Charles Parkinson KC. He was a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30 awards for Tax in 2019 and 2020, and previously served on the Tax Institute of Australia's Young Professionals Board.

From 22 Oct 2021, liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards legislation.
