Experience

Admitted to practice in 1995, Richard began his career as a solicitor at Clarebrough Pica before signing the Bar Roll in 1998, reading with Duncan Allen.

As an experienced trial and appellate advocate, he has appeared across all levels of the Australian court system—including the High Court, Court of Criminal Appeal, Supreme Court, County Court, Magistrates’ Court, and Children’s Court—and served as counsel assisting the Metropolitan Ambulance Royal Commission. His commitment to the profession includes roles as Secretary of the Criminal Bar Association and committee member for Liberty Victoria.

For over two decades, Richard has also specialised in US capital defence, representing individuals facing the death penalty at trial, appellate, and habeas corpus stages. His work spans federal jurisdictions and state courts in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi, including appearances before the US Supreme Court and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. In recognition of his service, the Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers has honoured him with both the Sam Dalton Award for Excellence in Capital Defense and the Trustees of Freedom Award for Lifetime Achievement.
